About Consumer Batteries

Standard batteries are common batteries for consumers like the ones that you commonly see in stores. Of those AA Alkaline Batteries is a very common one used in everything like toys, radios and flashlights. The battery nomenclature that is alphabetical and as it goes up alphabetically the physical battery size increases. So D Size Batteries are larger then the C, B and A’s that precede it.

So with this naming formula how did batteries names ‘A, Double-A and Triple A’ come about? After the initial designation of battery sizes electronic equipment became smaller and smaller and the battery sizes had to decrease. Therefore multiple ‘A’ letter batteries were introduced to signify batteries between the A standard and B batteries.

Today besides for the AA batteries there is AAA and even AAAA. The AAA battery is 44.5mm in length and 10.5mm. Since miniaturization is the goal of technology in many ways, devices that have in the past used AA Alkaline Batteries , such as remote controls and alarm clocks, are now using Triple A Batteries.
