Digital Cameras

Lithium-ion holds much more energy then the off-the-shelf AA or AAA batteries. This is needed because the flash and other parts of the camera consume a lot of energy. So unless the camera is only used very rarely, the battery requirements are higher then what can be gained from off-the-shelf batteries. Lithium-ion is capable of these higher energy needs.

Some advantages of lithium-ion for cameras are that their small weight and size allows the camera to be ultracompact. The capacity can be precisely measured more so then standard batteries. They’re good for the environment too as they do not need to be disposed of as often as disposable batteries.

Smartphones

Almost all smartphones today have the same type of battery that is used for its power and performance it is the lithium-ion battery which uses a conductive gel electrolyte and the anode and cathode to produce voltage. Before this was introduced in 1996 some cellphones used batteries with liquid electrolytes however this was bulky and unstable.

As smartphones become more ubiquitous they need batteries to draw power from for the many apps they run, gps, email and more. The parts of the smartphone that consume the most batteries are the display screen and the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS radios that are included on most smartphones. A lot of the popular apps that are used, such as twitter access your GPS to provide a location. The constant development of new apps that access these power-costly features and need higher processing power are a drain on the batteries. Though the pace of battery research is not as fast as the development of smartphone technologies there are new developments in the design of the cellphone microprocessor to make more efficient use of batteries.

Laptops

The lithium-ion battery used in laptops is meant to provide a charge that will be sufficient for it’s power needs. There are several components of the battery pack for laptops that allow it to function, recharge the battery and moitor its performance. For example the voltage tap moitors the power left in the different cells in the battery and the notebook connector connects the battery to the laptop circuitry and allows power and information in and out of the battery pack.

One common issue with power in computers is how the battery can overheat. To ensure safety the computer will shut down the power to the battery. You also have to watch out so that these cells don’t completely discharge. This can happen if you leave the computer in a very hot place. If the battery were to completely discharge then the batteries cells would be ruined.

Pacemaker

A pacemaker is a device that regulates the heart for people who have a medical problem with that. Lithium is used as the battery in pacemakers and lasts about 10 years. When the battery has to be replaced the whole pacemaker is removed and replace with a new one.
